Multimodal (Vision) Routing

Eluvix natively understands multimodal payloads conforming to OpenAI's structured image content specifications.

Multimodal Payload Format

Incoming requests can interleave textual content and base64 or URL-referenced images in the standard chat completions payload:

{
  "model": "auto",
  "messages": [
    {
      "role": "user",
      "content": [
        {
          "type": "text",
          "text": "Analyze this chart and summarize key trends."
        },
        {
          "type": "image_url",
          "image_url": {
            "url": "https://example.com/chart.png"
          }
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Dynamic Capability Detection

When a request reaches the Switchyard router:

  1. The Complexity Estimator parses the payload structure.
  2. If any message contains a content block with "type": "image_url", the request is tagged with hasImages = true.
  3. The router queries its upstream registry and filters out any node lacking the vision capability tag.

Routing Benefits

  • Prevents Model Crashes: Standard text-only models (such as llama3:8b or mistral) crash or return validation errors when supplied with raw image URLs. By filtering upstreams, Eluvix prevents these avoidable failures.
  • Cost Optimization: Text-only tasks remain routed to compact, efficient text models, while multimodal tasks are directed to vision-capable engines such as gpt-4o, claude-3-opus, or local llava instances.
  • Seamless Fallback: If a local vision model runs out of VRAM, the request cascades to the next configured multimodal provider without client interruption.
